Governor's Ball

In early United States history, the individual states were an interesting concept for the founding fathers to implant into their plan for the new Union, separate and independent of the British Royal Empire. In their genius, the forefathers held to the basics of self ruled states while blending the concept of unity by creating the federal government. It was the federal government’s job to decide foreign policy. It was the federal government’s job to maintain the unity between states. It was the federal government’s job to decide on a basic set of laws applicable to all states and to stay away from the from issues to be decided on by the each state. The states, on the other hand, were to concern themselves with matters of the state and look out for its best interests. Using the familiar three branch system of the federal government, these states would be led by the Governor.

Governors have immense power. They lead the executive branch and are responsible for making sure the laws are followed and that the system is administrated correctly. They can institute executive orders to change policy when they system is not working, but cannot change laws. They do have varied influence on the legislature in the law making process and can help sway the direction of the legislature. And the governor has veto power on the laws decided on by the legislature.

On Saturday July 10th, over 40 Governors from around the country will be in Boston for the Governor’s Association Conference. This is when all these powerful men and women will be in the same place together. They must be held accountable. They do not have the power to decide immigration laws, but it is their duty to maintain peace and justice within their states. They have the power to make sure that happens, but it is our job to remind them.

This Saturday will be our chance to peacefully demonstrate our wish for change. We will join at Copley Square at 12PM with a peaceful Protest rebuking the actions of Governor Brewer of Arizona. Her approval of the hateful Anti-Immigrant bill SB1070 is a misuse of her power. It portrays an agenda of hate that should not be tolerated and we must remind her that this is not right.
