Town Hall meeting with Senator Kerry 05/08/11
-Denis Lemos
This has been a couple of very busy weeks. I have been meeting with lawyers, SIM members and so many people from my community. It has been great; I don’t think I have ever met so many great people in such a short time. It feels really good to be around smart and motivated people. It makes me want to be more proactive and fight for our what’s right.
Last Saturday I spoke with Senator Kerry at a town hall meeting. I told him a little about my story and that I am on removal proceedings. Honestly, it was nerve wracking to speak to someone as astute as Senator Kerry and to do so front of so many people. But I had the incredible support of my SIM family. It felt really good to express myself in public and to tell them all that I am undocumented, and I am not ashamed to say it. It is not my fault and I am doing all I can to change this. I told them that I want to earn my grades, my degrees, my career, and my place in society. I am a taxpayer and a dreamer, and along with Vinny and so many others; I want to stay in this country that I love. More people must hear our stories so they can see that we are not criminals. They must understand that we are not their enemies. We are their allies in the betterment of this nation. We are grateful for all that this great country has given us and we want to give back. That’s why President Obama must stop the deportation of students and the DREAM Act must pass.
