Call your congressman & senators

The DREAM Act has just been introduced in the House and the Senate.

You can help to ensure that it becomes law by calling your Representative today and making your views known. To find out who your Representative is, please click HERE

Our goal is to get as many calls as possible to Representatives from their constituents and thereby demonstrate that there are a lot of us who care about this bill. So, please forward this message to anyone you know who might be willing to call their Represenative.

Call your Representative.

♣	Ask to speak to the staffer that handles immigration issues.
♣	Give them your address so that they will know that you live in the state they represent.
♣	Ask for the Representative’s position on the DREAM Act (unless you already know).
o If the Representative is in agreement and will vote for the DREAM Act, thank him/her.
o If the Representative is against the DREAM Act, urge them to reconsider.
o If the staff person is uncertain, ask for a letter explaining the Representative’s position on the DREAM Act.
Script/talking points:
[Always give your name and address first, so that the staff person knows you are a constituent.]

“I'm calling to ask Representative _______ to vote for the DREAM Act, which was just re-introduced by Representatives Lincoln Diaz-Balart, Lucille Roybal-Allard, and Howard Berman.

It would provide a path to lawful permanent residence for individuals who were brought to this country years ago as undocumented immigrant children. I deeply believe that this is a good bill, and one that rewards good behavior by young people who are high achievers contributing to their communities, have learned English, and succeeded in school despite many barriers.”

Optional additional points you can make:

♣	These students came to the US before the age of 16, have lived in the US for at least 5 years, and graduated from US high schools.  This is the only country many of these students know.
♣	Approximately 65,000 undocumented students overcome the odds to graduate from American high schools each year, but they face high barriers to higher education. The DREAM Act would give them an opportunity to contribute according to their ability.
♣	The DREAM Act is a good deal for taxpayers because it will increase the educational attainment of immigrants, thereby increasing the amount of taxes they pay and at the same time reducing social service and criminal justice costs.
♣	If you are a DREAM Act student, or know someone who is, tell their story.
