Our History

Student Immigrant Movement (SIM) was founded in 2005 by a group of immigrant students from Boston, Massachusetts; who were faced with the challenge of not having equal access to higher education as their classmates because of their Immigration status.

SIM comes from the hundreds of students and supporters that have been working on the In-State Tuition and Dream Act Campaigns since 2002. Our creation was only a part of this movement that is inevitable, which is people standing up for what they believe in.

Since its' creation SIM has been training hundreds of immigrant students leaders in the arts of organizing and public life. Most successfully SIM won a policy change in July 2007 that allowed "Lawfully Present Immigrant Students" to access In-State Tuition rates at Public Colleges and Universities.

In 2008, to intensify our efforts in Brockton, SIM trained Brockton student leaders in Leadership and Organizing for 5 weeks. Because the issues of immigration and education affect students statewide, SIM has branched out in state of Massachusetts creating chapters led by immigrant student leaders in: Greater Boston, Brockton and Worcester.

Our Mission
Our mission is to build the power of immigrant students by identifying, recruiting, and developing leaders across Massachusetts and the United States to address the problems in their own communities.

Our Vision
Our vision in that all immigrant students have equal access to higher education, are not discriminated based on their immigration status and collectively realize their full potential, define their own identity and become fully engaged in every aspect of society that affects their lives.
