The Student Immigrant Movement (SIM) is a youth-led statewide non-profit organization that seeksequal access to higher education that represents hundreds of members and thousands of supporters.SIM supports the DREAM Act and its goals of increasing access to higher education and diversity. DREAMAct eligible students continuously demonstrate themselves to have an extraordinary level of civicengagement within their communities both throughout MA and across the nation. Examples of overachieving students who excel academically and volunteer for their communities, as well as those whowish to serve the United States military, are countless and precisely the individuals that this legislationfocuses on as beneficiaries.
The DREAM Act solely benefits those who meet the requirement of having resided in the UnitedStates continuously for the past five consecutive years, and would only open a eleven year pathway tocitizenship. As such this legislation would not provide incentive nor would it benefit those who haveresided in the United States any less than the required time frame. Let us lessen the struggles for accessto higher education by not holding children and more specifically minors accountable, especially forthose who had no option in the life and situation our current laws have placed them in, nor limit any child’s access to an education.
Therefore, the Student Immigrant Movement and its membership ask you to support and co-sponsor S.729, the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act.
Very truly yours,
